Mass Casualty/Triage Class Report

We attended a great CERT class last night to learn more about “Mass Casualties and Triage.” The instructor, Cecil Teeters, was awesome. Eighteen of us learned how to quickly triage a large number of victims using the START method (Simple Triage and Rapid Transport) in addition to using SMART Triage tags. We quickly evaluated victims using respiration (<30 per minute), perfusion (capillary refill on nail bed in 2 seconds or less), and mental status (can respond to simple questions and commands.) After the class room presentation and videos, we practiced what we learned in the parking lot using Teddy Bear victims. Emergency managers believe trained, non-medical folks like CERT volunteers are good for triage since we are less likely to be tempted to stop and treat victims. The class was interesting, fun, and gave us some practical skills.

Incident Command System Class Report

Kenneth Teague spent 3 hours teaching a group of CERT volunteers and members of the Fire Department about the organization and structure used nation-wide in emergency incidents.  It was important information for any of us who may be dispatched to assist with a critical incident.  My rational side loves the organization and common sense approach of ICS.  It is designed for making the most effective and efficient use of manpower and resources.

The class is also offered online.  Once you have taken the class, you may go to the FEMA website to take a test which is pretty challenging.  You will get a certificate if you pass the test.  My husband took the test and passed the day after taking Kenneth’s class.

As CERT volunteers, we appreciate the opportunity to participate in these great training opportunities.  I encourage everyone to take advantage of these free classes.

Here are links the courses and material. The class this week was Incident Command System Class IC -100
